Overall Thoughts on the Season: Season 44, as a whole, was an average season of SNL - a typical season where a lot of the cast are vets churning out between excellent work (Cecily & Kenan) to occasional flops and showing signs of being a bit gassed-out (Kate & Aidy). This season, as a whole, …
May 18, 2019 – Paul Rudd / DJ Khaled (S44 E21)
Alec is milking his Trumpwin’s impression’s habit of pursuing his lips and those hand gestures. They aren’t working for me and make his impression even worse. I said it before, but seeing this awful “impression” makes me appreciate JAJ’s fantastic Trump (and his other impressions, in general) even more.
May 11, 2019 – Emma Thompson / Jonas Brothers (S44 E20)
Good to see another cold open with Kyle’s Chuck Todd. I enjoyed the first one and Kyle is a solid straight man in these.
May 4, 2019 – Adam Sandler / Shawn Mendes (S44 E19)
I have gotten quite tired with these Family Feud sketches, despite the fun performance by Kenan, and this premise, while I “get” it and what it is aiming for, I don’t feel is promising.
April 13, 2019 – Emma Stone / BTS (S44 E18)
A promising start to this cold opening, though I know its direction. When this originally aired, I thought it would be non-topical, though I feel now like a fool thinking that.
April 6, 2019 – Kit Harington / Sara Bareilles (S44 E17)
I still remember what a big shock it was seeing Jason Sudeikis being back as Biden. Back then, I assumed the show would have Beck or Mikey in the role.
March 30, 2019 – Sandra Oh / Tame Impala (S44 E16)
Sadly, despite the cold open “parodying” the Mueller Report, it is not the end for De Niro’s “impression” on the show, as he’ll grace us one more time in the finale.
March 9, 2019 – Idris Elba / Khalid (S44 E15)
Leslie is good as Gayle King, but I really cannot buy her in the role. I feel Ego Nwodim would’ve been a better fit, to me, but I guess she was too new back then to co-lead a cold open. (Then again, JAJ has been dominating cold opens since his very first episode, but I digress.)
March 2, 2019 – John Mulaney / Thomas Rhett (S44 E14)
The opening part with Ben Stiller’s Michael Cohen isn’t all too funny and is dragging on. I just do not comprehend why this rather generic role is given to a big-time comedian and not a cast member.
February 16, 2019 – Don Cheadle / Gary Clark Jr. (S44 E13)
Cold Opening - Trump Press Conference Donald Trump (Alec Baldwin) declares a national emergency to build wall Heh, I actually remember this trainwreck press conference from Trump. I was also taken aback with how this cold opening was basically quoting Trump verbatim. Alec is actually livelier and more energetic than he usually is in these …
